The importance of keeping hydrated in winter

In winter we have less urge for drinking water as studies show that we feel 40% less thirsty than we do in warm weather.

In summer we sweat more and thus feel more aware that we have to hydrate. However, we lose water also through respiration and urination, not only perspiration. In winter months we need to drink plenty as this also plays a role in regulation of our body temperature. In colder months of the year, we spend most of the time inside in warmed up places where the air is dry and we don’t even notice that we are sweating. At outdoor activities we wear heavier and layered clothing causing us to lose a lot of water through perspiration.

Are you dehydrated?

The most common signs of insufficient water intake which can couse dehydration are dry and chapped lips and skin, accompanied with feeling of tiredness and frequent headaches. If you are experiencing these symptoms, it is time to increase your water intake and to become more conscious of your water drinking habits.  Getting enough water actually makes us feel warmer in low temperatures and is essential for our body to regulate its temperature and prevent hypothermia. Winter is also the season when viruses flourish and sufficient hydration will help you fight off the infections with common cold and the flu as well as contribute to your general wellbeing.

Tips to stay hydrated in winter:

  1.           Be more conscious about your water intake. Have a bottle or a glass in your line of sight! This will remind you that you have to drink. A water bottle in your purse, a glass on your office desk and kitchen table will help you to become more mindful of hydration importance. The most common remark we hear from the Flaska users is that they drink more water since Flaska has become their everyday companion.
  2.           Have a jar filled with water on your dinner table and have everybody at the table have at least one glass before and after a meal. This also helps the digestion.
  3.          If you don’t like the taste of plain water, add a slice of lemon or orange which will make it taste more refreshing. Do you know that a lot of Flaska customers told us that the structured water from Flaska tastes better?
  4.          Fruit and vegetables are a great source of water as well. Eating those will also help you to achieve your required daily water needs and provide the vitamins to boost your immune system.
  5.           Limit the consumption of caffeinated drinks, sodas, energy drinks and alcohol. Those can actually make your body even more dehydrated. Try to make water the drink of your choice!

Now you know it. Drinking enough is equally important in winter as it is in summer. Drinking more water is a very simple solution and contribution to your health and general wellbeing.

If you are experiencing signs of dehydration, it is important to take the following steps:

  1. The first and most obvious step is to drink water. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water per day. If you are already dehydrated, drink water more frequently.
  2. Replenish lost electrolytes: If you have been sweating excessively, you may have lost essential electrolytes. Drink sports drinks or eat foods high in sodium and potassium, such as bananas, coconut water, and avocado.
  3. Rest: If you are feeling fatigued or dizzy, rest until you feel better. Avoid exercise, as it can increase dehydration.
  4. Seek medical attention: If symptoms persist or worsen or you experience severe dehydration, seek medical attention immediately. Severe dehydration can result in organ damage or failure, seizures, and even death.

Remember, prevention is key, so make sure to drink plenty of water and eat hydrating foods throughout the day.
